A group known as Concerned Imo Citizens has vowed to lodge a formal report to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the way and manner the 27 Local Government Area Chairmen in the state are mismanaging funds that have been accruing to their respective councils without anything to show for it.
The group, in a press statement issued by its National Coordinator, Comrade Gideon Nwachukwu, said the recent revelation that no Local Government Area in the state receives less than #300m monthly and the glaring lack of commensurate infrastructural development gives credence to reports that the funds that accrue to the Local Government Councils are being diverted, misappropriated and embezzled”.
“We are aware that the petition we intend to forward to the EFCC, may be suppressed by those in authority, but we will not relent in our effort to ensure that all local government funds are accounted for by those to whom they are entrusted. Justice must be done and those found culpable dealt with accordingly.
The Local Government Chairmen will be held accountable for the funds that accrued to their respective councils under their watch, even when they must have left office. There will be no hiding place for any of them”.
Chilagorom further said, “if at least fifty percent of the funds that have accrued to the councils so far were prudently disbursed and deployed according to the needs of the people, the alarming insecurity and debilitating hunger ravaging the people would have been drastically reduced. Honestly the situation in Imo is very pathetic.
“Without being told the Local Government Chairman should know that they will be held responsible for any financial infraction. The excuse by some of them that they are being manipulated, arm twisted and short changed by the state government does not hold water because they signed for and collected the funds. Hence it is assumed and rightly so, that they are the ones who disbursed the funds for whatever they were used for. They should therefore brace up and gird their loins properly because the day of reckoning must surely come”.
