Comrade (Sir) Uchenna Nwokeji, National Treasurer of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities has commended the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma for magnanimously increasing the minimum wage of civil servants in the state as well as his promise to clear the arrears of pensions and gratuities of retirees.
Comrade Nwokeji, who is also the President of Owerri Sports Club stated this in a release he issued and made available to newsmen.According to him, the minimum wage of #104,000 as against #70,000 that was formerly paid is a very big relief to the affected civil servants, their children and wards who will certainly have a new lease of life.
Similarly, he doffed his hat for the Governor, who, in the same vein, tremendously increased the minimum wage of medical doctors in the state civil service to #508,000 monthly, adding that this will not only motivate them to give their best but will equally attract more quality medical doctors/ practitioners into the system and arrest the brain drain syndrome (Japa) that had continued to deal a heavy blow on our health system resulting in the loss of human capital.
Furthermore Nwokeji, a thorough bred labour leader also used the opportunity to congratulate the workers and urged them to reciprocate the Governor’s gesture by being more focused, proactive and result-oriented, adding that, to whom much is given, much is expected. He also expressed optimism that the state government will not only keep to its promise but also sustain the policy in the overall interest of Imo people who will forever remain grateful.
