–      Says, It’s Illegal Attempt To Stifle Freedom Of  Speech

Amnesty International has condemned in very strong terms the harassment and trial of Barr Chinedu Agu over charges of cyberstalking against Governor Hope Uzodinma.

The group which stated this on their social media handle noted that prosecuting  Agu, a lawyer and human rights activist amounts to undue harassment and intimidation aimed at stifling freedom of speech as guaranteed in the constitution.

Recall that Chinedu Agu, who was charged on September, 25, under the Cyber crimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) (Amendment) Act 2024, which gives the Federal High Court jurisdiction to handle cases arising under the Act. Under international human rights law, is allegedly being persecuted for his social media posts which were critical of the state governor.

“In a brazen illegal attempt to stifle his right to freedom of expression and movement, the Nigerian authorities played out a pre-determined sham court process to remand him in prison — in utter disregard for the rule of law. The police deliberately arraigned Chinedu Agu today at the wrong forum —a Magistrate Court in Owerri. Expectedly, the Magistrate declined jurisdiction and issued a pre-determined order, remanding Agu in prison custody till 29 October 2025—on charges for which it lacks jurisdiction pending his arraignment at the Federal High Court”.

The group called on the state government to discontinue the prosecution of Barr Agu without further delay.

“On their part, the police must be upholding the rule of law, instead of becoming a tool in the hands of politicians by carrying out arbitrary arrests, detention, and other undue restrictions of the rights of individuals to the legitimate exercise of their freedom of expression and opinion”.
