• Accuses state of needless hostility

A public war of words has erupted between the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) and the Imo State Government over allegations of planned “massive electricity outage.”
The dispute began when the Imo State Government, through its Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation, and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, accused EEDC of planning to sabotage a state government electricity project by deliberately plunging the state into darkness.

In a strongly-worded press statement released on Monday, EEDC categorically denied the allegation, labelling it as “baseless, unfounded, and completely devoid of truth.” The utility company advised its customers in Imo State to disregard the government’s claim entirely.

The power distributor did not stop at a denial. It accused the state government of engaging in propaganda to divert public attention from what it described as the government’s ‘longstanding hostility’ towards its operations.
EEDC turned the tables on the sabotage allegation by referencing a specific incident. The company claimed that on Saturday, November 15, 2025, armed policemen, “allegedly acting on the instructions of the Imo State Government,” stormed the Egbu Station of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

According to EEDC, the security forces forced the operator on duty to shut down all feeders “at gunpoint,” an action that plunged the state into total darkness. “What greater act of sabotage could there be?” the statement questioned.

The statement signed by EEDC’s Group Head of Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh, in a final note of caution to consumers, stated that if any power outage occurs from this point forward, the Imo State Government should be held responsible, having “raised false alarms” against the EEDC.
The company called on the state government to provide an enabling environment for licensed operators rather than “frustrating their operations through the use of state machinery.”
