It was an exciting moment as the Chairman of Mbaitoli Local Government Council, Hon. Ifunanya Nwanegwo, officially inaugurated the Interim Administration/Caretaker Committee of the Obi Mbieri Autonomous Community.
The inauguration took place on Monday at the Mbaitoli Council Headquarters, Nwaoriebi.
The event was witnessed by councillors of the council and a large crowd of Obi Mbieri indigenes, led by their stakeholders.
While charging members of the committee to be truthful, diligent, and united in the discharge of their duties, Hon. Nwanegwo urged them to work in line with the directives of the Imo State Government to maintain peace and order in Obi Mbieri. He encouraged them to allow love and tolerance to prevail in Obi Mbieri, an agrarian community he described as the heart of Mbieri.
Nwanegwo explained that the government constituted and inaugurated the committee to restore calm in the community. He reiterated that the committee would oversee the general affairs of Obi Mbieri pending the release of modalities by the government for a town union election.
“Obi Mbieri must be better and in our time. I have called you here to deliberate on how peace can reign in Obi Mbieri.
Therefore, maintain calm in your domain. Peace is priceless. Do not listen to mischief makers who seek to heighten crisis in Obi Mbieri because of money.
“I am taking this pain to ensure that peace is restored and sustained in Obi Mbieri. Obi Mbieri is the heart of Mbieri. The state government dissolved the town union in Obi Mbieri and directed me to constitute an Interim Administration/Caretaker Committee to quell the crisis and restore peace. With the official inauguration of this committee, we will get it right pending when the government releases modalities for election.
“The committee is therefore advised to discharge its duties creditably, without fear or favour, and strictly in line with the directives of the state government,” he said.
Earlier, Hon. Onyekachi Oguike, Councillor representing Amaike Ward, enjoined members of the committee to reconcile aggrieved parties and embrace inclusiveness in order to sustain peace and unity in the community.
Pledging to remain calm and tolerant, the people of Obi Mbieri assured the council of their support as it continues to deepen democratic governance in the area.
Speaking through some of their leaders — Hon. Emeka Nwadi, Chief Oscar Okorie (President General, Ohohia), Barr. Okechi Uzozie (President General, Umuaguru), Chief Basil Agunweke, Chief Donald Uzoaru, and Chief Adolphus Osuji — the people demanded to see their traditional ruler, whom they said has been away from the community for over five years.
The members of the caretaker committee are: Mr. Clement Ohanyerenwa (Interim President General), Chief Adol Osuji (Secretary), Mr. Okechukwu Iwuajoku (Youth Leader), Mr. Valentine Chibundu (Financial Secretary), Mr. Kenneth Duruji (Public Relations Officer), Pastor Moses Nwanna (Provost), Mr. Samuel Nwaigbo (Treasurer), and Mrs. Nkiru Sylvanus (Women Leader).
The committee members pledged to carry out their responsibilities in accordance with government directives, while commending the state government for its vital role in sustaining peace and order in Obi Mbieri and Imo State at large.
