The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Imo State has conducted a peaceful and successful state congress, with new leaders emerging to run the affairs of the party for the next four years.
The congress, held on Saturday at Kanu Nwankwo Square, Owerri, followed the ward and local government congresses earlier conducted across the state.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Congress Committee, Hon. Nkem Ukandu, disclosed that the election was conducted through a consensus arrangement after the party agreed on harmonisation.
At the end of the exercise, Prof. James Okoroma emerged as the State Chairman of the ADC. In his acceptance speech, he described the congress as a new dawn for the party in the state and beyond.
Okoroma stated that the ADC is committed to rebuilding Imo State, expressing confidence that the goal would be achieved through a credible electoral process, which he believes the party is well-positioned to win.“ADC will rebuild Imo State. The smooth conduct of the congresses marks the beginning of a new chapter in the rebuilding process. We are optimistic that this goal will be realised through a free and fair electoral process, which we are confident of winning,” he said.
Also speaking, a frontline politician from Okigwe Senatorial Zone, Emma Okewulonu, commended the peaceful conduct of the congress. He expressed optimism about the party’s chances in the forthcoming elections and urged members to remain united and focused in their collective quest to reposition the state for peace and development.
Earlier, former governors of Imo State, Chief Achike Udenwa and Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, expressed satisfaction with the smooth conduct of the congresses. They noted that the ADC has over 200,000 registered members in the state and is well-positioned to win future elections, including the presidential, governorship, and other elective positions, in a bid to correct what they described as political anomalies bedeviling the people.
