….Seeks Return Of Wedding Property
A 41-year-old teacher, Patricia Onyinyechi Osuagwu, in an interview on Monday, spoke extensively on what she described as three years of “pathetic” maltreatment in her marriage, accusing her husband, who was simply identified as Onyebuenyi, of constant threat to her life, financial exploitation, abandonment during childbirth, and seizing her wedding property and other personal belongings.
In an interview, the graduate of Health Education who hails from Amaumara, in Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, said the marriage which began on December 26, 2022 collapsed irretrievably after her husband allegedly told her he had “married another woman” and ordered her out of his house.
“There were many incidents to indicate that he was no longer interested in me as a wife. What I suffered and endured in the marriage was terribly pathetic,” Patricia said. “He threatened my life on several occassions stressing that if I did not leave his house he would kill me and commit suicide.”
Patricia, a trained teacher with a Bachelors Degree in Education B.Ed and also operates a POS business allegedly narrated a pitiable pattern of deprivation, economic sabotage, physical and emotional violence. She claimed her husband used her phone without her consent to obtain ₦25,000 loan. “And between February and May 2026 he fraudulently took a total of ₦88,600 using her as a proxy without her consent and knowledge.”
She cited another ₦44,100 he took for his mason work but did not refund, in addition to the most recent incident involving ₦41,700 that preceded her being pushed out.
The most damning allegation relates to the birth of their only daughter, who is now 3 years old. Patricia said she underwent a Caesarean Section and spent over three months in hospital.
“He could not deposit money to the hospital. It was through my struggle and the assistance of my childhood guardian that I raised the hospital bill,” she said.
“After spending over three months in the clinic, he abandoned me and the baby there. We stayed over three weeks… before the bill of ₦260,000 bill could be raised. Yet, he contributed little or nothing to it..”
She added that feeding and providing for the family was “a tug of war,” Hence, on December 25, 2025, during Okpuofe Christmas celebrations, she alone bought food items for visitors “from both his side and mine, while he, a mason, came back from work “with nothing.”
Patricia said her husband openly told her to “go and marry” because he was tired, and that she later discovered he was involved with another woman who “owns a chemist shop in Okpuofe” and is already pregnant.”
The breaking point reportedly came last Sunday, when her husband summoned her mother, to pick her up before 8:00am “to avoid what he would do and regret later.”
Patricia is now demanding the return of items she said were given to her during and after her wedding including a refrigerator, gas cooker, oven, hot plate, plastic seats she bought at Owerri in December 2025, three pots from her mother, and a Bible from the Charismatic Movement.
She said she went to his house on Sunday, August 1, 2026, with she with her uncle but “he had removed all these things, including the standard plastic seats.” He allegedly “sneaked out leaving his phone on the bed.”
“I’m pleading with the authorities to prevail on him to allow me take my things from his house,” she said. “If I’m allowed to retrieve my property from him, I have no other problem, since he has he has already told me to go and marry.”
The case has escalated online. Patricia denied her husband’s brother, Akujuobi Onyebuenyi’s claim that they “came to their house, destroyed things, and used a knife to cut him,” describing it a frame-up posted on social media. She also referenced another post where the brother was shown “lying supine in bed and covered himself with a bandage,” threatening suicide.
Patricia’s mother, Osuagwu, corroborated the account. She said her daughter’s husband invited her to come and take her daughter urgently because if she passed the night in his house, he would kill her before daybreak.
Chinyere said the family did not support the marriage from the onset because “he practically came with nothing,” a development that led her women’s group to fine and later expel her.
“When we went back two days later to take her belongings, Chinaza was nowhere to be found. His brother spoke my husband and I abusively. He called me and my husband fools, imbeciles,” she said.
“Let him return those things to us since he said he is no longer interested in my daughter. Onyebuenyi had taken another woman oh! Leave my daughter’s property for her. That’s all!”
She dismissed the brother’s injury claims: “He just tied himself with bandage to cause confusion and draw sympathy to himself. Let him untie the bandage and show the world the wounds he claims were inflicted on him.”Patricia said she has reported the matter to the police and wants them to recover her things from him.”
Efforts to reach Onyebuenyi and his brother Akujuobi for comment as at press time were unsuccessful.
Women rights advocates in Mbaise say the case highlights ongoing issues of domestic violence, physical and economic abuse in marriages. They called on the Imo State Ministry of Women Affairs and relevant authorities to intervene and ensure that Patricia recovers her property safely.
Onyinyechi’s account of her marital experiences debunks insinuations on social media that her journey to her husband’s family to take her property was to insult or victimize any person as claimed in the trending videos posted online.
