The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to temporarily close the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, Imo State, for approximately 25 days to allow for essential repairs and resurfacing.
In a press release dated October 8, 2026, and signed by Henry Agbebire, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, FAAN said the proposed closure would commence on October 20, 2026, subject to final confirmation.
The authority attributed the planned closure to the deterioration of sections of the runway, including potholes and extensive surface cracks, which it said had been worsened by recent heavy rainfall.
According to FAAN, the rehabilitation project will involve pavement repairs, crack treatment and resurfacing of affected sections to restore the runway to a safer operational condition.
The authority explained that the intervention was particularly important ahead of the anticipated increase in passenger numbers and flight operations during the Christmas season.
FAAN further disclosed that the planned works would include an extension of the runway to enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft as air traffic to the region grows.
It said the expansion was intended to improve passenger comfort and facilitate a more seamless travel experience for airport users.
The authority advised passengers planning to travel through Owerri during the proposed closure period to maintain contact with their respective airlines for updates on flight schedules and alternative travel arrangements.
FAAN also assured airport users that it would continue to engage relevant stakeholders and announce the confirmed closure and reopening dates once they had been finalised.
The authority appealed for the understanding and cooperation of passengers, airlines and other airport users, reiterating its commitment to ensuring safe, efficient and reliable airport operations.
