Imo State College of Nursing Science held its 13th matriculation ceremony on Friday, June 13, 2025, amidst pomp and pageantry, as the management, staff, students, their parents, friends and well wishers exuded joy and happiness..
In her speech, the Provost of the College, Mrs Hannah Offor who was consistently commended by both the management, staff and students of the college for her open door policy and down to earth approach to issues thanked His Excellency, Governor Hope Uzodinma for providing enabling environment for the growth and development of the college.
She further stated that, through the strategic vision of the Governor, the college now has two additional programs in the Department of Post Basic Nursing and Midwifery in addition to the, “
The Provost also expressed delight that all programs of the institution have been accredited by relevant regulatory bodies including the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) for the award of ND/HND in Nursing.
According to her, “with the present status of the college, students are now admitted through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). The students on graduation from the college will be awarded certificates as Registered Nurse, Registered Midwife, Registered Public Health Nurse and HND Certificate. They will also be eligible to participate in the National Youth Service Corps.”
She said, “for clarity, what I am saying is that students who take their studies seriously will obtain all these certificates at the end of their 4-year stay in this college because the examinations are segmented and taken periodically within the 4 year duration of study in this college”.
Mrs Offor also stated that the College has by virtue of upholding a standard educational students training and utilizing objective assessment in all school evaluation processes, consistently maintained profound academic excellence in the Nursing and Midwifery Council final qualifying examinations. Hence, the college encourages academic excellence by rewarding students who perform exceptionally with academic awards of prize gifts.
“Our college remain grateful to the Governor- Senator Hope Uzodimma, the Imo State House of Assembly Committee on education, the Ministry of Education, the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, the National Board for Technical Education, NBTE, the Traditional Institution in Imo State, all stakeholders, staff and students of our college for the wonderful support and collaboration that brought this college to this present status. We call for continuous support for growth and sustainable development of the institution”.
She enumerated some of the challenges of the college which include, “Construction of a 250 capacity ICT centre has become imperative because of the reforms in Nursing pattern of examination that has moved to computer based test for all levels of examination. This is in line with the global accepted practice for nursing programme. Our college has already keyed into this reform. It is in this regard that the college requires the provision of ICT centre to meet with this globally accepted best practices.
Following the advice of National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), during their accreditation visit in recognition of the available facilities and landmass of the institution that the management should apply for additional programmes which include specialties in nursing and skills acquisition. Similarly, the NBTE also advised that we should apply for upgrade of the two departments of Aboh Mbaise and Awo Omamma to stand as a campus of OND/HND Nursing. The implication of this upgrading will increase the admission quota of the college whereby students will be admitted into the three campuses of Imo State College of Nursing Sciences at Orlu, Aboh Mbaise and Awo Omamma respectively. Other needs of the college include: Provision Donation of Laptops and Medical books, Provision of 150KVA sound proof generator, Provision Donation of solar street light, Provision of 500 capacity auditorium, Provision of serviceable functional vehicles for the management staff, Two coaster, (32) seater bus for students clinical experiences and other movements, Subvention for the general administration of the college, Asphalting of the college internal roads.

The Governor, who is the visitor to the college was represented by the Commissioner for Education for Tertiary and Technical Education, Prof Victor Nwachukwu. Other dignitaries present at the occasion include the Commissioner for Education (Secondary and Primary Education, Prof B.O.T Ikegwuoha, member, representing Orlu State Constituency in the Imo State House of Assembly Hon Ikenna Ihezuo, who chaired the occasion, member for Nkwerre State Constituency in the Imo state House of Assembly, Hon Barr Chisom Ojukwu who represented the Speaker, Hon Chike Olemgbe, former Vice Chancellor, Imo State University, Prof Awuzie, the traditional ruler of Amaifeke Ancient Kingdom, HRM, Eze Dr Emma Okeke, represented by the traditional ruler of Ofekata Orodo autonomous community, HRH, Eze Marcel Uzegbu, who, in his speech commended the management, staff and students of the College for maintaining high academic standard. He thanked the Governor for supporting the College’s growth, development and upward mobility in all ramifications.
Also in attendance were, Barr Mrs Uche Oranusi, Director of Nursing Services, Imo State, Mrs Elsei Ihuoma Njemanze, Director Nursing Services/HOD Nursing, Federal Teaching Hospital, Owerri who delivered the Pre-Matriculation lecture, among other distinguished guests including past and present state legislators, political office holders, traditional rulers, captains of industry among others.
