Imo Harmony Project (IHP) one of the groups advocating that Owerri zone should produce the next Governor of Imo State has debunked what it referred to as erroneous and mischievous reports in several quarters that Owerri zone scuttled former Governor Ikedi Ohakim’s second term bid in 2011.
The group in a communiqué it issued at the end of its quarterly meeting held at the Emekuku country home of its Chairman/Convener, Captain Emma Ihenacho, stated that “it is on record that some Local Government Councils in Owerri zone gave the incumbent governor more votes in the 2011 election”.
According to the communiqué signed by Captain Emma Ihenacho and Dr Sha Azu Okorie as Chairman/Convener and Secretary respectively, “it is absolutely unfair for any person or group of persons to create the false impression that Owerri zone is responsible for determining the outcome of the said election.”
The group also cautioned those responsible for propagating such falsehood to desist forthwith, bearing in mind the need for peaceful and harmonious co-existence between Owerri, Orlu and Okigwe zones.
“As a way of sensitization, the assembly welcomed the intervention of the newly formed Owerri Leaders of Thoughts – an APC leadership forum, and enjoined the leadership of other political parties to emulate their footsteps in establishing zonal leadership caucuses committed to the goal of realizing an Imo governor of Owerri zone extraction in 2027.
The group added “the IHP as a diverse stakeholders platform is committed to support and collaborate with all such zonal party leadership caucuses to realize Imo governor of Owerri Zone extraction in 2027.”
It also appealed to all the political parties in the State to take into consideration the noble objectives of the Imo charter of equity in determining their governorship candidates for the 2027 elections.
The organization commended governor Hope Uzodimma for his support for the implementation of the charter whilst urging him to remain steadfast in his commitment to the goal of fair and inclusive governance which the charter represents.”
