-Says; Union’s Secretariat, Its Leadership Subject Of Litigation
Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Imo State, Press Center Management Committee, Comrade Austin Agwulonu, has reacted to a release signed by one Ethelbert Nnanna, as the Coordinator, Greater Imo Initiative, a group he described as faceless which recently claimed that some Journalists in the state were man handled during a press briefing organized by the member, representing Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency in the Federal House of Representatives,Hon Ikenga Ugochinyere.
The group also falsely claimed that the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Imo state chapter, handed it’s Secretariat located along Port Harcourt Road, Owerri to the government during the Rochas Okorocha administration.
Agwulonu, described the claim as laughable and ridiculous, adding that it is one of the renewed plots by Anedo General Services, the company that former Governor Rochas Okorocha used as a proxy to fraudulently buy the expansive Secretariat and it’s appurtenances against the wish of Imo Journalists who vehemently resisted the fraudulent plot.”Is unfortunate that today,same Anedo general services are working with some agents of Imo state government to achieve what they couldnt achieve through court”.
According to him, ” the latest barrage of falsehood is designed to discredit Imo Journalists after their shameful loss at the court. There was never a time that the union’s Secretariat was handed over to the government. Rather , some criminals conspired with the government to fraudulently sell the property after collecting money upfront. Besides, the said Ethelbert is not a member of the NUJ, hence one wonders why he thinks he is in a position to speak for the journalists who were purportedly attacked and man handled.”
“As journalists, we know that some top government officials are used to issuing press releases which they coerce their stooges to own up. It is on record that Imo NUJ had severally accused the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Declan Emelumba of writing press releases which he induced Chris Akaraonye and his cohorts to sign. He also used other debased journalists to propagate all kinds of falsehood.”
” Let it be known that the Imo NUJ Press Center is for all journalists and others irrespective of political affiliation.
It is also not true that any journalist was man handled here for any reason.
We therefore urge Nnanna and his co-travellers to desist from dragging Imo NUJ into their dirty style of politics.
