With a view to reducing suffering, high cost of living, transportation fare, strengthen quality learning and economic activities, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), has urged government to immediately intervene and fix the deplorable Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO)/Ihiagwa/Obinze Road.
The National Association of Nigeria Students made the urge through its National Director of Travel and Exchange, Comr. Nduka Chibueze Kelvin, during a chat with journalists in Owerri, on Thursday.
NANS while pleading with the appropriate authority: The Ministry of Works and Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to quickly work the road which it said is badly damaged, regretted that the spoilt road delays movement, slows academic and commercial activities, heightens poverty, hardship, suffering and anguish with transport fare being increased on daily basis by some shylock commercial vehicle drivers.
Comr. Nduka therefore warned that if government fails to quickly fix the said link road, NANS would have no option left than to “shut down FUTO” and its adjourning roads so that no staff comes in or goes out, frowning that the reconstruction of the link road has been politicized, hence the abandonment.
“NANS is seeking for immediate intervention on the badly damaged FUTO/Ihiagwa/Obinze road from the appropriate quarters such as the Ministry of Works and FERMA. If nothing is rapidly done, FUTO students will shut down movement, block the entire campus so that no staff goes in or comes out. Enough is enough. We have been neglected and suffered for many years despite the huge money that is being generated from the University and its environs”, the NANS leader stressed.
