Amnesty International has called on the Imo State Police Command and other security agencies to urgently disclose the whereabouts of Pastor Okolie Christian Mmaduabuchukwu, who was reportedly abducted from his residence in Obor Autonomous Community, Umutanze, Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the human rights organization expressed deep concern over the disappearance of Mr. Okolie, stating that he was allegedly taken from his home at about 9:15 p.m. on August 5, 2026.
According to Amnesty International, Mr. Okolie’s whereabouts remained unknown as of August 6, 2026, a situation it said has heightened fears over his safety and wellbeing while causing distress to his family and members of his community.
The organization urged the Imo State Police Command and all relevant security agencies to immediately establish and publicly disclose Mr. Okolie’s whereabouts, ensure his safety, and clarify whether he is being held in official custody.
Amnesty International further stated that if Mr. Okolie is in official custody, the authorities must promptly disclose the legal basis for his detention, grant him immediate access to his family and legal representatives, and either charge him with a recognizable criminal offence or release him without delay.
The rights group also called on the authorities to carry out a prompt, impartial and effective investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction and ensure that anyone found responsible for any unlawful act against Mr. Okolie is brought to justice in accordance with the law.
Reaffirming Nigeria’s obligations under national and international human rights law, Amnesty International emphasized that the government has a duty to protect all persons from violence, abduction, arbitrary arrest, unlawful detention, enforced disappearance, torture, extrajudicial execution and other human rights violations.
As of the time of filing this report, the Imo State Police Command had not issued any official statement regarding Mr. Okolie’s whereabouts or the circumstances surrounding his reported abduction.
