Orluzurumee, the umbrella socio-cultural organization of the twelve local government areas that make up the Orlu zone has unveiled a template for the selection of a new executive that will pilot the affairs of the organization.

This was contained in a document written by Prof U.A Amuzie, a Chieftain of the organization and former Vice Chancellor of the Imo State University (IMSU), Owerri.

Prof Awuzie, in the well articulated template which was copied to some leaders of the factional groups including Chief Emeka Diwe and Hon Chief Chime Nzeribe and other stakeholders alongside Hon Ugochuwku Nzekwe,the President, Orluzurumee Youth Assembly and other stakeholders.

The document which was also copied to Prof Francis Dike, a former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Imo state and  President, Orlu Elders Council reads thus, “In constituting an Executive for a socio-cultural organization like ORLUZURUMEE, with membership both in Nigeria and in the diaspora, there are several important issues to consider.  Some of the key factors that should guide the selection of the leadership should include but not limited to the following critical considerations.;

“1. Cultural and Social Knowledge.

Deep Understanding of the Organization’s Values: 

“The President General must have a profound understanding of the culture, history, and goals of ORLUZURUMEE, especially as the organization bridges multiple cultural contexts in Nigeria and the diaspora.

“Community Engagement Experience: Prior experience in socio-cultural initiatives or community development programs is crucial. The chairman should have an established record of working with diverse groups and fostering unity.

“2. Leadership Skills.

Strategic Vision: 

The President General should be capable of developing and articulating a long-term vision for the organization that aligns with its goals. This includes the ability to plan and execute initiatives both locally and internationally.

Decision-Making Ability: Strong. problem-solving skills and the ability to make informed, timely decisions are essential, particularly when managing cross-border activities and coordinating efforts between Nigeria and the diaspora.

Communication Skills: 

The President General must be an effective communicator, able to engage with diverse groups, mediate conflicts, and present ideas clearly both in-person and online.

3. International Exposure and Experience.

Global Awareness: Since the organization operates in the diaspora, the chairman should understand international relations, especially regarding Nigerian communities abroad. This knowledge will help in representing the organization in international forums.

Travel Experience: Previous experience traveling or living abroad will aid the  President General in understanding the logistics and cultural nuances of working in different countries, ensuring smooth execution of international activities.

Cultural Sensitivity: The  President General should be able to navigate and respect cultural differences, ensuring inclusivity and respect within diverse groups.

4. Administrative and Managerial Skills

Organizational Management: The ability to manage both local and international teams, coordinate events, and handle the administrative aspects of running an organization across multiple countries.

Financial Management: The President General should have experience in fundraising, budget management, and the financial acumen necessary to run a large, cross-border organization efficiently.

Tech-Savvy: Familiarity with modern communication tools and platforms is essential, especially if the organization operates across regions with varying access to technology.

5. Interpersonal Skills

Teamwork and Collaboration: A good chairman should work well with others, empowering members of the organization, and leading with a collaborative spirit.

 Emotional Intelligence: 

Strong interpersonal skills are important for resolving conflicts, managing diverse personalities, and building trust within the community.

Networking Ability: The President General should be capable of building partnerships with other organizations, governmental bodies, and influential leaders both in Nigeria and the diaspora.

 6. Integrity and Accountability

 Ethical Leadership: The President General must be someone who upholds high standards of integrity and ethics. This is crucial for maintaining the organization’s reputation both locally and internationally.

 Accountability: 

Strong accountability measures are necessary, especially when overseeing financial resources and organizational outcomes. The  President General should be transparent and open to scrutiny.

 7. Commitment to the Organization’s Mission

 Passion for the Cause: 

The President General should demonstrate a strong personal commitment to the objectives of the organization. This passion will inspire others and motivate the board and members to align with the organization’s goals.

Dedication to Service: Since the Chairman may need to travel frequently for international supervision, they must be dedicated to the long-term success of the organization, willing to invest time and effort into its growth and success.

8. Selection Process Considerations

Eligibility Criteria: Clearly defined criteria (e.g., years of membership, leadership experience, cultural contribution) should be established to ensure that only qualified individuals are considered.

Representation: Ensure that the chairman represents the interests of both local and diaspora members. The process should be inclusive, with diverse representation considered for the leadership positions.

Election Process: 

A transparent and democratic election or selection process should be in place, where the members of ORLUZURUMEE have input, and the best candidate is chosen based on merit.

In conclusion, when selecting a President General for ORLUZURUMEE, it is vital to look for someone with a balance of cultural understanding, leadership experience, international exposure, and a commitment to the organization’s mission. The PG and His Team  should be able to lead and represent the organization both locally and globally, ensuring that it continues to thrive and serve its diverse membership.

The Use of President General here does not mean that he should be the only person in the Exco expected to possess these attributes. It is expected of all the members of the Exco, though in varying degrees”.
