The Member representing Ideato North and South Federal Constituency, Barr. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, has called for accountability and transparency in the management of federal allocations to the constituency. Speaking during a press conference on August 7, 2025, at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Press Centre, Ugochinyere expressed concern over the lack of visible impact of these allocations on the lives of Ideato people.
Ugochinyere lamented the lack of basic amenities, deplorable state of healthcare facilities, schools, and infrastructure in Ideato, noting that no Local Government Area in Imo State receives less than N300 million in monthly allocations. He questioned the utilization of these funds, emphasizing that the people of Ideato deserve to benefit from their resources.
The lawmaker also highlighted the urgent need for federal and state intervention to address the erosion menace in Ideato, particularly in Urualla, Isiokpo, and Ejezie, stressing that inaction could lead to the extinction of the area.
The Parliamentarian expressed his profound gratitude to the Federal Government and the Imo State Government for their prompt and efficacious intervention at the Umuchima gully erosion site. He further implored both tiers of government to extend similar swift and decisive action to other erosion-prone areas within the Local Government Areas, which have been ravaged by the devastating effects of gully erosion.
Ugochinyere expressed dismay over the recent attacks on Arondizuogu and Umualaoma communities, where 26 people were brutally killed, and called for the establishment of well-funded local vigilante groups to ensure the protection and security of lives and property.
Ugochinyere revealed his personal donation of N5 million to the families of the victims and his launch of the Ideato Emergency Fund, which has so far raised N32 million out of a target of N50 million. He expressed disappointment that the Imo State government had not visited the victims with relief materials and called for concerted efforts to support them.
The lawmaker also faulted the absenteeism of elected officials of the two local governments, who live in Abuja and Owerri and rarely visit their constituencies. Ugochinyere emphasized the need for these officials to be accountable to the people they serve and to prioritize their welfare and development.
