-Set To Restructure Party

The Imo State Labour Party on Saturday, 16th August 2025, held a stakeholders meeting at Protea Hotel in Owerri, where critical issues bordering on the leadership of the party at both state and national levels were discussed. The meeting, chaired by Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku, a chieftain of the party, had renowned party officers and reputable members in attendance.

Prof. Ndubuaku highlighted agenda of the meeting which center on the leadership structure of the party. He revealed that the party is setting up its leadership structures at the state and national levels, following a series of leadership crises that have been completely resolved.

He said that the party will soon start congresses, membership drive, revalidation, and registration of new members. He tasked party members to prepare to mobilize and contest for elections, with efforts underway to ensure that every electorate’s vote counts.

Some stakeholders took turns to make special remarks at the event, Senator Athan Achonu, the party’s governorship candidate at the 2023 elections emphasized that Labour Party is a united family, running an all-inclusive policy with officials and stakeholders of impeccable qualities. He urged the stakeholders to remain steadfast and committed to the continued growth and development of the party.

Hon. Matthew Nwaogu, the Representative Member for Ezinihitte Mbaise, Aboh Mbaise and Ngor Okpala Federal Constituency thanked attendees, welcoming old members to join and work together for the party’s good, emphasizing that the party is new and won’t revert to old ways.

Hon. Clinton Amadi, the House of Assembly Member for Owerri Municipal expressed joy that the party’s leadership problem ended after the Supreme Court ruled on Barr. Abure’s tenure as national chairman. He stressed on the party’s stability, unity and preparedness to win the 2027 elections. 

Barr. Ndidi Anike, a governorship Aspirant of the party at the 2023 election, congratulated party members for standing strong against detractors, expressing hope that stakeholders’ faces and voices will show in 2027 and beyond.

Hon. Uche Ogwuagu, a House of Rep. Candidate of the party at the last election, mentioned that many party members have been bruised or shortchanged in one way or the other, using himself as a case study, but enjoined every party faithful to forget the past and move on with love for the party and one another.

The meeting’s climax was the nomination of the interim State Working Committee, with stakeholders given nomination forms to nominate their preferred candidates. Uche Ogwuagu suggested that for the sake of equity and fairness, the party should consider an Owerri zone chairman, given the party’s history of chairmen from Orlu and Okigwe zones.

Notable Attendees were Mrs. Oluchi Opara, Former National Treasurer of the party whose presence added glamour to the occasion as she received accolades for standing for truth and equity in ensuring the party’s leadership is now at the right direction. Comrade Nwauwa, Interim Deputy National Chairman of the party, Sir Basil Maduka, A notable party member, Dr. Mrs. Uche Ejiogu, a party member and leader, Delegates from Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress representing the labor unions and several others were in attendance.
