Some Imo Lawyers and human rights groups, yesterday accompanied their colleague, Barr Chinedu Agu to honour police invitation.
The lawyers who were seen at the headquarters of the State Police Command were elegantly dressed in suits while waiting for the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) handling the matter.
One of them who pleaded anonymity told our reporter that they were at the Police headquarters to know the exact offence that Agu committed, aside from condemning the renaming of Douglas Road after Governor Uzodinma.
The lawyer who simply identified himself as Nwachukwu said, “it is worrisome that politicians have resorted to using phantom criminal defamation as a guise to suppress freedom of expression which is the constitutional right of every citizen. Otherwise, what is the essence of the police inviting Barr Agu, a concerned Imo citizen simply because he expressed his opinion about the governance of the state? If any person feels that he or she has been defamed, the best thing to do is to initiate a suit in Court instead of rushing to the police. Let it be known that lawyers in Imo State will no longer keep quiet and allow those in government and other corridors of power to deny the people their right to free speech”.
As at the time of filing this report, it was not ascertained if the police disclosed the identities of those who wrote the petition for which Barr Agu was invited.
