– Gives Reasons
The Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) on Monday October 13, 2025 began a 14-day warning strike to protest what it referred to as the federal government’s refusal to fulfill the terms of their agreement.
Comrade Stephen Osuji, Chairperson of ASUU, Imo State chapter, in a release captioned, “why we are on strike” which he signed and made available to the press stated that, “The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU-IMSU) has joined the ASUU National 14-day warning strike starting Monday, 13th October 2025. This action is not against our students or the university; it is a cry for help to save our public universities from collapse.
We are on strike because:
• No IMSU lecturer has received the earned academic allowances since 2009.
• Promotions are done without the financial benefits that should follow.
• Pensions and gratuities for retiring staff are uncertain.
• Salary arrears for promoted staff are left unpaid.
• The university is poorly funded, and essential facilities are deteriorating.
• The autonomy of universities is being eroded by government control and the Treasury Single Account (TSA) system.
These problems directly affect the quality of education our students receive. When lecturers are demoralised, classrooms are empty of motivation, and research suffers; students lose the most.
We love our students and want a university system that truly works, one where both teaching and learning can thrive. That is why we must stand up now.
Please bear with us. Support us. The fight is for a better university system and a brighter future for every Nigerian student”.
