The Federal Government Girls College, Owerri that has won several awards of academic excellence in different areas, on Friday October 31st, 2025 conducted a peaceful, credible, transparent, free and fair election that produced the Dr Jerry Woko led executive that will pilot the affairs of the school’s Parent Teacher Association for the next three years comprising the 2025/2026, 2026/2027, 2027/2028 academic sessions.

The election which was conducted in one of the school halls in a very peaceful and orderly manner started with the accreditation of eligible voters who turned out in very large numbers to ensure that men and women of impeccable character and unblemished track record who will prioritize the welfare of their children emerged as members of the PTA executive.

The Director/Principal of the college

Mrs Obiagwu, in her address, harped on the school’s commitment to discipline, quality teaching and learning, adding that in line with the Federal Ministry of Education’s zero tolerance for indiscipline, the school will not hesitate to take decisive action against erring students.

A total of 469 voters were accredited, comprising 370 parents and 99 teachers. Three persons contested for the position of Chairman, three for the position of Treasurer and two for the position of Public Relations Officer (PRO).

At the end of the well organized, credible and transparent exercise, Dr Jerry Woko, a lecturer at the Imo State University, Owerri emerged as the chairman with 204 votes to defeat Kelechi Njoku and Prof Echereobia, who got 130 and 112 votes respectively, while 14 votes were voided.

Mrs Nkechi Doris Anyamkpa emerged as the Vice Chairman unopposed. Mrs Ikewuibe Veronica emerged as the treasurer by polling 314 votes to defeat her two co-contestants who polled 60 and 15 votes respectively, while 10 votes were voided. For the position of Public Relations Officer (PRO), King David Anoruo, a seasoned communication expert scored 322 votes to defeat Mrs Akinwumi, who polled 114 votes while 24 votes were declared void.

In the same vein, Mrs Achinine Judith and Mrs Egwue O. R, emerged as Secretary and Financial Secretary respectively.

Some of the parents and teachers who spoke to this Reporter shortly after the election condemned in very strong terms what they described “as the malicious and mischievous campaign of calumny” against the Director/Principal of the college who they described as a seasoned administrator and a devout Christian.

The purveyors of falsehood failed to appreciate Mrs Obiagwu-led management’s passionate commitment to excellence and quality service delivery. Today’s election has put the detractors to shame and ridicule because the school has always recorded visible and verifiable achievements.

The high point of the event was the oath of office administered on members of the new executive by Barr Mrs Ijeoma Igboanusi.
