The family of late Nnanna Ukaegbu former of TEDEM College and the Basil Nnanna Ukegbu Secondary School, Imerienwe has finally scheduled his burial for December 21, 2025, following the discovery of the tally with which was deposited at the mortuary by his grandson.
Recall, that the family of the late educationist who passed on in March, 2017, has been unable to lay him to rest as a result of family squabbles that culminated in his youngest son, Anthony Ukegbu to seize his corpse and demanded ransom before he would release it for burial.
It was gathered that the said Anthony confiscated the mortuary tally without which the corpse will not be released for burial and demanded a certain amount of money before he would release it.
After several deliberations, the Nnanna Ukegbu’s only daughter, Grace promised to give him the sum of N10 million in exchange for the confiscated tally. But on second thought, she reneged on the promise on the ground that Anthony being, who he was, would not release the tally after collecting the money. Hence the man’s remains was left in the morgue till date.
According to a source “at a point, the elders of the community summoned Anthony and threatened to banish him from the community if he failed to release the tally.
Rather than surrender the tally, he fled from the community and went into hiding until he died early this year.
In a surprising twist of events, Anthony’s while cleaning the house after his father’s burial saw the tally and gave it to his uncles. Hence, they have fixed the burial for December 21, 2025.
Late Nnanna Ukegbu, was a seasoned educationist, respected community leader and politician who contested the Imo State governorship election on the platform of the Great Nigerian Peoples Party (GNPP) alongside late Samuel Onunaka Mbakwe, who eventfully won the election on the platform of the Nigeria Peoples Party (NPP).
