— Izunaso, Other Orlu Leaders Watch Closely for Uzodimma’s Political Signal
As preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum, former Governor of Imo State, Chief Ikedi Ohakim; Senator Ifeanyi Ararume; Senator Patrick Ndubueze; and Chief Mike Ejiogu once an ally of Governor Hope Uzodimma in the All Progressives Congress (APC) before defecting to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are positioning themselves to contest the Okigwe Senatorial seat, setting the stage for what many describe as a battle of political heavyweights.
An insider source who spoke on condition of anonymity told this reporter that “it will be a very keen contest because of the personalities involved. However, it is believed that Senator Ararume still has a firm grip on Okigwe Zone despite several allegations by opponents aimed at demystifying him.”
The source further noted that in 2019, despite not being in power, Ararume reportedly influenced the emergence of the APGA candidate, while Ohakim, who contested under the Accord Party, did not produce a winning candidate.
According to the source, although Ohakim retains a network of loyal supporters, the political equation could shift significantly if Governor Uzodimma withdraws his backing from Ndubueze, who some critics claim has underperformed but is still believed to enjoy the governor’s support.
“On the other hand, Ejiogu, who many regard as relatively new in politics, is said to have made notable impact through empowerment programmes that have touched many lives,” the source added.
Meanwhile, the situation in Orlu Zone appears more complex. While senators from Owerri and Okigwe zones are gearing up for possible second terms, Senator Osita Izunaso is perceived to be cautious about making an early move.
There are speculations that Governor Uzodimma may be considering a placeholder arrangement in Orlu Zone that could pave the way for his own political transition after leaving office—an arrangement many analysts believe may face significant resistance.
Overall, the political atmosphere in Imo State remains uncertain, with many aspirants reportedly waiting for clear signals from the governor before making definitive moves ahead of the 2027 elections.
