Strong political undercurrents are building in Imo State ahead of next year’s general election, as strategists, key stakeholders and support groups loyal to former Governor Emeka Ihedioha and seasoned technocrat, Dr. Chima Amadi, intensify pressure on the duo to contest the Owerri Zone Senate seat.

The agitation, according findings  is a calculated move tied to the larger political chessboard ahead of the November 2027 governorship election.

It is argued that the January 2027 senatorial election for Owerri Zone is very critical as it will serve as a launchpad for any serious governorship contender. With the widely acknowledged Charter of Equity expected to favour Owerri Zone in the rotation of power, the eventual senator is projected to gain significant political momentum, visibility and hugel advantage.

“The Senate seat is now a strategic stepping stone to Douglas House. Whoever wins it will have the structure, visibility and leverage to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the governorship race later that year”, said, Chief Pius Nwokedi, a key leader of Owerri Mandate Group (OMG).

Aside the support groups of the contenders, multiple political groups and grassroots movements have reportedly intensified consultations and advocacy, urging both Ihedioha and Amadi to declare interest, adding that Owerri zone must be intentional if it must achieve the project.

Among them, the Owerri Zonal Equity Movement (OZEM), the Nmegbu Adinma Forum (NAF) and the Concerned Owerri Stakeholders Forum (COSF) have been vocal in their calls, citing the need for experienced and credible candidates who can unify the zone and mount a formidable challenge in 2027.

According to a statement by OZEM, “Owerri zone cannot afford to gamble at this critical time. We need tested leaders with statewide appeal and administrative experience. Both Ihedioha and Amadi fit this bill.”

Similarly, youth-based coalitions have taken to social media to amplify calls for fresh but formidable representation that aligns with the zoning arrangement.

While observers argue that Emeka Ihedioha a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and ex-governor of Imo State brings significant political capital to the table though not without some baggage and strained alliances, Dr. Chima Amadi, known for his policy driven approach and organizational competence is being projected as a bridge between technocracy and politics whose mass appeal could attract broader support across party lines, making him a formidable candidate in both the senatorial and potential governorship contests.

As consultations intensify, both camps remain publicly cautious, neither confirming nor denying their intentions. However, insiders suggest that behind-the-scenes engagements have reached advanced stages.

The coming days will be decisive, as declarations or continued silence by both figures could reshape the political landscape in Imo State.
