To sustain sanity in the display of culture and tradition in Orsu Clan, Ezes of Orsu Clan (comprising Orsu and Orlu LGAs) have indefinitely suspended Masquerade (Mmanwu) outings and activities in the area.
The Traditional Rulers had cited vices such as assault, rape, abuse, extortion, violation, intimidation and various forms of nuisance which they identified were associated with the display of the Mmanwu hence the the suspension.
In a communique raised after a recent meeting of the Ezes of Orsu Clan being conducted by HRM, Eze Dr. EC Okeke, Imo State Chairman of Traditional Rulers and Chairman of South East Council of Traditional Rulers and HRH, Eze Samson Okwudimma who is Chairman of Ogbako Ndieze Orsu Mmano, which was issued to the media, the Ezes said the suspension could only be lifted when there have been a thorough reformation of the masquerade in line with old era standard.
“Having looked thoroughly at the extent of the decay and the gravity ok f the violations/abuse and their damaging consequences including the alleged link to the insecurity in the area.
“Being determined to save our land from sliding into anarchy and to complement the effort of Governor Hope Uzodimma in his fearless fight against crime and insecurity in the state, Eze Okeke in agreement with all the Ezes of Orsu Clan, declared indefinite suspension on masquerade outings and displays in Orsu Clan starting immediately.
“All masquerade heads (Akatakpos) and their Patrons, have been directed to start immediate reformation of Mmanwu Masquerade to meet the standard of old are.
“The Masquerade heads and their patrons are to do all those in full consultation and agreement with the Ezes who are number one in security, culture and traditions in communities.
“Reformation has to be completed before the suspension will be reconsidered”, the Ezes maintained.
The Traditional Rulers stated that they were dismayed of the ill-activities of Masquerades who use the cultural and traditional display to abuse, extort and rape people and in several occasions block major roads, using dangerous weapons as guns, axes, matchets to violate and rob vulnerable individuals.
They pointed out that most of the ugly things that drive the Akatakpos to use the Mmanwu to do illicit things are money, wickedness and dubiousness and advised youths to embrace hardwork, productivity to be able to become useful in life.
