-Mbaitoli Chairman, Nwanegwo, Eze Uzegbu, TPM Osaigwe, Others Hail Peaceful, Credible Election
The people of Ofekata Orodo Autonomous Community in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State on Sunday, June 28, 2026, witnessed a historic and peaceful transition of leadership as a new Town Union Executive Committee emerged through a widely applauded democratic election.
The election, held at the premises of Ofekata Orodo Community Primary School, attracted a large turnout of community members, traditional leaders, government officials, youths, women, and stakeholders who gathered to participate in what many described as one of the most transparent town union elections in the area’s recent history.
Proceedings commenced at about 11:00AM with the presentation of manifestos by candidates contesting various elective positions. Aspirants outlined their visions for community development, accountability, security, youth empowerment, and infrastructural advancement before delegates proceeded to cast their votes using the Option A4 open ballot system.
At the end of the keenly contested exercise, Mr. Chinonye Kenneth Ogbonna secured a landslide victory with 212 votes to emerge the new President-General of Ofekata Orodo Town Union, defeating his opponent, Mr. Uwandu Donald Obinna, who polled 23 votes.
Other elected officers include Hon. Stephen Chuks Agogbuo as Vice President-General, Mr. Jude Ejiako as General Secretary, Mr. Clement Chinedu as Assistant Secretary, Mr. Ikpe Bonaventure Obijuru as Financial Secretary, Mr. Onyemere Mezie Mathew as Treasurer, Mr. Ibe Okechukwu John Bosco as Public Relations Officer, and Mr. Iheanacho Francis as Provost.
Declaring the results, the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Sir Augustine Chukwuma, stated that the election was conducted in strict compliance with the constitution of the Ofekata Orodo Town Union. He affirmed that the successful candidates had satisfied all constitutional requirements and were duly elected to pilot the affairs of the Community.
Following the announcement of the results, the newly elected executive members were immediately inaugurated by Barrister Osuoha in the presence of officials from the Imo State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, who monitored the electoral process and commended the orderly conduct of the exercise.
In his acceptance speech, the newly elected President-General, Mr. Chinonye Kenneth Ogbonna, expressed profound gratitude to the people of the Community for the confidence reposed in him.
He pledged to operate an open-door administration anchored on transparency, accountability, unity, and inclusive development, assuring residents that his administration would prioritize projects and programmes capable of improving the welfare of the people.
“I am deeply honoured by this overwhelming mandate. This victory belongs to every son and daughter of Ofekata Orodo. I promise not to disappoint the confidence reposed in me. Together, we shall build a stronger, more united and progressive community,” he said.
Speaking shortly after the exercise, the Executive Chairman of Mbaitoli Local Government Area, Hon. Ifunanya Nwanegwo, who personally witnessed the election, described it as one of the most peaceful, transparent, and credible community elections conducted within the Council area.
He praised the maturity displayed by contestants and voters, noting that the peaceful conduct of the election demonstrated that democracy thrives where fairness, discipline, and respect for established rules prevail.
The Council Chairman urged other autonomous communities in Mbaitoli to emulate the exemplary democratic culture demonstrated by the people of Ofekata Orodo.
Also addressing the gathering after receiving the newly inaugurated executives, the traditional ruler of Ofekata Orodo Autonomous Community, HRH Eze Engr. Marcel Iheanacho Uzegbu (Okata II of Ofekata Orodo), congratulated the new leadership and urged them to remain worthy ambassadors of the Community.
The monarch charged them to place the collective interest of the Community above personal considerations and work harmoniously with all stakeholders in promoting peace, unity, and sustainable development.
Similarly, the Traditional Prime Minister of Ofekata Orodo, Chief Simon Onyekwere, popularly known as Osaigwe Electrics, applauded the peaceful conduct of the election and congratulated the newly elected officers.
He advised them to embrace inclusive leadership, foster reconciliation among all groups, and pursue a common vision capable of moving the Community to greater heights.
Residents who spoke after the election also expressed satisfaction with the peaceful atmosphere that characterised the exercise, describing the outcome as a victory for democracy, transparency, and the collective will of the people.
The successful conduct of the election has been widely celebrated as a major milestone in the democratic evolution of Ofekata Orodo Autonomous Community, with many expressing optimism that the new administration will usher in an era of greater unity, accelerated development, and lasting peace.
