-Says:Recruitment process falls short acceptable standard

The immediate past Chairman of the Academic staff Union of Polytechnics, (ASUP) Imopoly chapter, Dr Echeta Desmond has sounded a note of warning to all those seeking job opportunities in the new University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, Umuagwo which was recently approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC) as Imo State University of Agriculture and sciences, Environmental to be aware of Job Scammers and swindlers.

Etcheta stated this on Wednesday, October 14,2020 when he featured on a phone-in radio program to discuss economic program of Nigeria and those measures that the Federal government should take to address the economic hardship occasioned by covid-19 pandemic.

The former HOD of Department of Economics Imopoly and Financial Consultant ,noted with dismay that the job recruitment procedure as published on the social and some newspapers obviously came short of the acceptable standard for job placement and has remained scandalous. He queried if an establishment can advertise for job placement without first constituting the management staff who will by extension supervise the process.

Echeta stated that the purported advertisement was not signed by anyone let alone the registrar whose duty it is to advertise for job placement.”As we talk, there is no Registrar, Vice-Chancellor, Bursar and other management staff to run the University. If you read that advertisement, it directs prospective applicants to submit their application to the office of the Registrar. Who then is the Registrar? You can see that the process is not pure. Some persons may have decided to scam our people in the name of job placement”, he stated.

Speaking further, Echeta informed that no governing council has been constituted for the new university.”Even the Imo State ministry of education appears totally unaware of what is happening in the new school”. He also wondered who is behind the scene that has assumed the position of management team and Governing council for the new university to the extent of advertisement specification. He advised Imo youths to be warry of job scam, expressing worries that with the present rising unemployment rate in the state, a lot of youths will fall victim because they desperately need job.

Echeta called on the government of the day to ensure the University is not hijacked by greedy elements while commending the governor for expunging the clauses that made the University a Public Private Partnership (PPP) Institution instead of a sate owned University as Imo people were earlier made to believe. He revealed that in the previous arrangement, Imo people had just 10% while the unknown investors got 90% as it is with the Eastern Palm University which was built with public fund only to be converted to private University, owned by the former governor, Rochas Okorocha.

It would be recalled that while conducting officials of the National Universities Commission (NUC) who arrived Umuagwo to assess the facilities on group for a smooth take off of the University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, Rev. Fr. Dr. Wence Madu introduced himself as  the Coordinator.

Though the Governor has not made further pronouncement on the hijack of the exercise, most Imo sons and daughters have continued to raise eye brows, over the surreptitious manners advertisements have been churned out for employment of even principal officers of the new university without first constitute a management team.

The development is in effect raising a whole lot of suspicion and doubt as to the sincerity of government in expunging the clauses that conceded the new Imo state University of Agricultural and Environment and Science to a Public Private Partnership (PPP).
