The Imo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has appointed Comrade Ori Martins acting Coordinator of the International Institute of Journalism Owerri located at the NUJ secretariat along Port Harcourt road Owerri.

His appointment was conveyed in a letter dated August 28, 2022, signed by the secretary Imo NUJ, Comrade Austin Okoro.

The appointment followed the death and subsequent burial of Chief (Dr) Ndudi Nnadi who until his demise few months ago was the substantive Co-ordinator of the institute.

The union before this time had said that they will appoint a new Coordinator of the institute only after the burial of the former deceased co-ordinator, who served meritoriously.

Ori Martins, a former correspondent of the Halmark Newspapers, Sun Newspapers and currently the co-publisher of Eastern Oriental Newspaper, is a journalist with many years experience.

Congratulating him on the appointment, the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the union, Comrade Precious Nwadike described Ori Martins as one of the best journalists in Imo.

Nwadike said the era of allowing non-professionals take over leadership of the union is gone.

Nwadike said that the union will co-operate and collaborate with the headquarters of the International Institute of Journalism, Abuja to ensure that the school reopens soon and normal academic activities resume.

He regretted that some hoodlums who are non journalists in a bid to sell the NUJ secretariat shut down the professional school and vandalized the property.
