–Accuses Imo CP Of Complacency
A non-governmental organization under the aeiges of ‘’Protect the weak International Foundation PROWIF, has cried out over the incessant violations of the rights of citizens and residents of Imo State by law enforcement officers.
The group, in a bid to put an end to the menace which it says is unlawful and unjustified, in an open letter it addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Police Command, highlighted some of the spots and locations where the atrocious and dehumanizing acts are perpetrated.
The letter which was signed by a renowned human rights activist and radio broadcaster, Mazi Chinonso Uba, popularly called Nonso Nkwa who recently contested for the Mbaitoli/Ikeduru federal constituency seat on the platform of the Advanced Democratic Congress ADC reads, ‘’ Greetings CP Imo state Police Command. We hope this open letter meets you well.
We at the PROTECT THE WEAK INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION (PROWIF) a Human Rights Group headquartered at Km 3 Orlu-Owerri Rd Egbeada Mbaitoli LGA Imo State, wish to bring to your knowledge ( if you are not aware) of the unprofessional activities of some of your men in Imo state especially those tagged ‘special squad’
To begin with, these officers are always on Jean and black polo, with pierced ears, dyed hair and dread lock.
To an ordinary man on the street, they are not different from ‘Yahoo boys’ or even kidnappers. The way they double cross motorists, your heart would skip if you were taken unawares.
Their incessant harassment of young men who dress well and drive good/ flashy cars have left sour and bitter tales of woes on their trail.
The Sienna cars they use for their operations are now well known in Owerri, and these set of people do not care where and how they extort people, either in secret or open places.
The mental picture of an average Nigerian whenever he or she sees a police officer,is that of ‘a tormentor’ because of the activities of a few bad eggs in the force.
It is the wish of Imolites that you critically look into those unwholesome inhuman activities, against the people and address them squarely.
In as much as we acknowledge the huge importance of the security agents in our society, we won’t fail to point out where they are violating the fundamental human rights of the people.
We do believe that you would swing into action immediately on this matter and restore the confidence of the people in the police force in no distant time.
We suggest, you look into this issue wholistically and set up a discreet monitoring team that would report to you directly, to dispel insinuations that the police high command are indirectly involved in the extortion.
This, we believe, would help fish out the bad eggs soiling, tarnishing and degrading the name/ image of the Nigerian police Force, thereby sanitizing the organization for optimal confidence.
We as a human rights organization, would always partner with the police and indeed other security agencies to ensure that the Rights of everyone including security agents are protected.
Imo people and of course, all her inhabitants are watching to see the positive outcome of this report.
We hope to see the real meaning of the slogan ‘ Police Is Your Friend’ manifest in Imo state police command.
For the avoidance of doubt, we still believe that there are still many good police officers out there doing their bit for the good image of the Nigeria police Force especially in Imo state.
Thank You and God Bless You with Wisdom’’,
