The frightening level of insecurity in Imo State that has been on the front burner of public discourse for sometime, has continued to take it’s toll on the people, as a retired army General, R.C. Duru was abducted last weekend somewhere around Orji, in Owerri North Local Government Area of the state.

It was gathered that the victim was driving himself in a black Mercedes Benz ML jeep when he was ambushed and whisked away by the dare devil gunmen.

Information available to our news desk indicate that, “the kidnappers vamoosed with their victim’s vehicle and checkpoints were informed. His mobile phone 08033567459 was tracked to somewhere in Mbaitoli L.G.A before it was switched off”.

Meanwhile, “efforts are ongoing to locate the kidnappers and rescue the rtd General. All are requested to make efforts using all contacts (though discretely) to hasten return of the kidnapped General.

“Maj Gen Duru is a member of 33rd Regular and NDC 18.”

Aside government officials and facilities, the military and officials of other security agencies have been targets of attacks by gunmen in the South-East”.

The prevailing insecurity in Imo State has elicited series of accusations and counter accusations. While the state government is accusing the opposition and the Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB, of being behind it, the opposition and a cross section of Imolites are accusing the state government and it’s agents of allegedly using the Ebubeagu Security Network and other security agencies to sponsor insecurity, heat up the polity and create panic with a view to scaring eligible voters from the polling booths, on November 11. This, they said is to enable the APC government in the state and it’s agents to leverage on the induced voter apathy to manipulate results of the upcoming governorship election especially in places designated as no-go arrears because of insecurity”.

Recall, that a combined team of the military, police and other security operatives were burnt to dealth alongside their patrol vehicles few days ago at Umualumaku, in Ehime Mbano LGA and few hours ago, news of the abduction of a retired army General also filtered out among other disturbing reports of killings, abductions, arson and reprisal attacks that have claimed the lives of many innocent people in addition to the destruction of properties worth millions of naira”.
