– Imolites Ask Uzodinma
By Martin Opara
Following the report of the Imo State Government White Paper on the recovery of unlawfully acquired lands, the verification of those whose lands were forcefully or inappropriately acquired, and official recommendation by relevant authorities that the lands be returned to their rightful owners who have shown verified proofs of ownership, a cross section of Imo people are wondering why the state government that set up the panel that issued the White Paper and also directed the Ministry of Lands to return the lands to their rightful owners has not deemed it necessary to follow up and ensure that its directive is enforced in line with the principles of justice and fairness.
Speaking to our reporter recently, some of the victims who were captured in the White Paper, shortlisted and verified are wondering why the Ministry of Lands is yet to return their lands to them or make alternative provision despite assurances by the state government that they would get back their lands shortly after the verification exercise.
They called on the state government to ensure that justice prevails, adding that it is absolutely unfair that lands they spent their life savings to acquire through due process would be forcefully taken away from them without replacement or compensation.
“What is the essence of the panel the state government set up to look into the matter if the panel’s report, short listing, and verification of those who have genuine cases does not yield desired result?”
One of the victims who simply identified himself as Chief Frank Egesimba, said, “ensuring that all those who were captured in the White Paper, shortlisted and verified, get back their lands or commensurate compensation will enhance the electoral fortunes of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections because, most of us have children, grandchildren, inlaws and other extended family members who are eligible voters. They are aware of the heart break we are currently enduring. In the same vein, if the government gives us back our lands, they will also not only be aware but also pleasantly disposed to ensure victory for the APC because one good turn deserves another”.
Recall that shortly after the current administration came on board in 2024, it reinvigorated the Investigative and Judicial Panels of Inquiry, including on the recovery of unlawfully acquired lands which later issued a White Paper that the government studied, and thereafter, shortlisted and verified those with genuine cases. Hence, Imo people are now asking the Hope Uzodinma-led APC administration when those who have gone through the whole process and fulfilled all stipulated requirements will be given back their lands?
