The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council (JCC), Imo State, has alleged foul play in the death of a serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Comrade Okebaram Stanley Chimaroke, who was serving in Bassambiri, Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
Addressing a press conference in Owerri on Monday, August 3, 2026, the Imo State chapter of NANS expressed outrage over what it described as the slow response of the relevant authorities in investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of the corps member, whose body was reportedly found floating in a river in Bayelsa State.
In a statement signed by Comrade Ozoemena Samuel Emetuche on behalf of the NANS Joint Campus Council, Imo State, the association issued a seven-day ultimatum to the leadership of the Bassambiri Community in Nembe LGA, the NYSC, the Nigerian Police Force, Bayelsa State Command, the Bayelsa State Government, and the National Secretariat of NANS to expedite investigations and unravel both the circumstances surrounding the death and those responsible.
The student body urged the authorities to leave no stone unturned in ensuring justice, warning that failure to act decisively could compel the NANS community to pursue lawful means of demanding accountability.
NANS also lamented that the family of the deceased had allegedly been denied access to his remains, describing the development as disturbing and capable of fueling suspicion.
According to the statement, growing tension and anxiety have heightened fears that the circumstances surrounding the death may not have been fully disclosed.
The association stressed that the life of every corps member is valuable and deserves adequate protection. It called on members of the public with credible information to cooperate with the appropriate security agencies to ensure a thorough investigation.
NANS also commended all student comrades who participated in the condolence visit to the family of the late Stanley Chimaroke Okebaram in Imo State on August 1, 2026.
