The Orluzurumee Youth Assembly (OYA), the apex youth body in Orlu Senatorial Zone of Imo State, has honoured the Member representing Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency, Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere Ikeagwuonu, with a Distinguished Legislative Excellence Award, recognising him as the Best Performing Member of the House of Representatives from the zone.
The award was presented on Thursday during a courtesy visit by the National Executive Council of the Assembly to the lawmaker at his residence in Akokwa, Ideato North Local Government Area.
Presenting the award, the National President of the Orluzurumee Youth Assembly, Prince Izunna Obiefule, JP, said the recognition followed the outcome of the Assembly’s Legislative Performance Assessment, which evaluated the performance of legislators representing Orlu Senatorial Zone during the 2023–2026 legislative session.
Obiefule explained that Ugochinyere emerged as the highest-rated House of Representatives member from the zone after what he described as a comprehensive, evidence-based and impartial assessment conducted by the Assembly’s Legislative Performance Assessment Committee chaired by Comrade Achi Nnamdi.
According to him, the Distinguished Legislative Excellence Award was instituted to recognise outstanding legislative service, promote accountability and encourage excellence in public representation across the zone.
He commended the federal lawmaker for his commitment to effective representation and urged him to sustain the leadership qualities that earned him the recognition.
“The Orluzurumee Youth Assembly is here to recognise excellence and encourage you to do even more for the people of Ideato North and Ideato South Federal Constituency. Outstanding public service deserves public recognition, and we urge you to continue providing effective, inclusive and people-centred representation,” Obiefule said.
He further stressed that the Legislative Performance Assessment was conceived as a non-partisan civic initiative aimed at promoting democratic accountability and improving legislative performance, insisting that it was neither intended to disparage any individual nor targeted at any political party.
Responding, Ugochinyere thanked the youth body for what he described as a fair, objective and credible assessment of lawmakers from Orlu Senatorial Zone.
He described the award as both an honour and a motivation to redouble his efforts in delivering quality representation to the people of Ideato North and Ideato South Federal Constituency.
The lawmaker said his commitment to public service is driven by the desire to improve the lives of his constituents through responsive leadership, youth empowerment, infrastructure development and sustained constituency engagement.
He noted that challenges such as poverty, insecurity, unemployment and underdevelopment require visionary leadership, accountable governance and strong institutions to address.
Ugochinyere also applauded the Orluzurumee Youth Assembly for institutionalising legislative performance assessment as a mechanism for strengthening democratic accountability, noting that objective evaluation would encourage elected representatives to remain focused on delivering tangible dividends of democracy.
He reaffirmed his commitment to expanding youth empowerment programmes, supporting education, creating employment opportunities and executing impactful constituency projects aimed at improving the welfare of his constituents.
