Imolites For Good Governance (IFGG) a human rights group has called on the Commissioner of Police in the State, C.P. Aboki Danjuma to address the several complaints and petitions written to his office about the excesses and unprofessional conducts of operative of the Tiger Base unit of the State police command before asking for more reports about corrupt police officers.

The leader of the group Comrade Matthew Golden who stated this while addressing newsmen in Owerri, the state capital over the weekend, said,  “for the police commissioner to be asking for complaints about corrupt police officers when, nothing has been done about the reprehensible activities of the Tiger Base Unit that have been on the front burner of public discourse for a very long time amounts to playing to the gallery.”

“As I speak to you now many innocent people are languishing and being tortured in the horrifying cells of the Tiger Base Unit, despite several reports, complaints and petitions to the CP’s office. His office has done practically nothing to control the unit’s excesses, yet he is asking Imo people to report corrupt police officers. I see that as nothing but window dressing aimed at diverting attention to seek commendation. The Police Public Relations Officer PPRO, Henry Okoye, is not even helping matters as he seldom responds to phone calls and text messages. When he does, he sounds evasive, thereby worsening the situation.”

A cross section of Imolites who commented on the development, expressed disgust about the way and manner in which operatives of the dreaded Tiger Base Unit allegedly arrest, detain, torture and manhandle Imo prople, especially youths, most of who die in custody. Some of the victims who survived the ordeal narrated the near death experiences they went through before regaining freedom after huge sums of money.
