The Imo State Government has directed former Local Government Area Chairmen whose tenures have expired to hand over all government property under their care to the Directors of Administration in their respective local government areas.
The directive follows the expiration of the tenures of Local Government Chairmen and Councillors across the 27 local government areas of the state.
The announcement was contained in a public service announcement signed by the Secretary to the Government of Imo State, Chief Cosmas Iwu.
According to the statement, Governor Hope Uzodimma has approved that all handover and takeover formalities be concluded on or before the close of work on Monday, October 5, 2026.
The state government also clarified that former local government officials who wish to contest in the next local government elections are free to indicate their interest, provided they fulfil all requirements stipulated by the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC).
