· Owerri now wins award as dirtiest state capital
A Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Samuel Aanyanwu (SamDaddy) has charged Imo state government to wake from slumber and rise up to the challenge of cleaning up the streets and environ of the state capital Owerri posed by heaps of assorted refuse and was decorating the streets also blocking drainages and waterways leading to large scale flooding after each fall of itself and the dirtiest state capital for now.
The Senator who noted that Owerri capital territory which was the cynosure of eyes to visitors and once adjudged to be the cleanest city in the country can be now adjudged the dirtiest state capital dotted with mountains of refuse.
In a recent public statement issued by the distinguished Senator through his Special Media Adviser Ikenna Onuoha, the Senator expressed bitterness that every part of the state capital is littered with heaps of refuse without government showing any concern.
According to him, from Orji, Works-Layout, Aladinma, MCC road, Amakohia, Akwakuma, Egbeada, World Bank, Wetheral, Tetlow and Douglas roads amongst others, the story remain the same.
He noted that such negligence is capable of creating disease that may likely throw the state into another dangerous pandemic in addition to the existing covid-19 virus.
He regretted how Owerri that won awards in the past as the cleanest state capital in Nigeria has suddenly become a shadow of itself.
Senator Anyanwu further charged the ruling APC government to brace up and tackle the menace immediately, advising her not to hesitate to relieve those found wanting of their duties to ensure the cleanliness and health of the citizens.
Meanwhile, it has been observed that daily evacuation of refuse from the city has been halted for some time and monthly clean-up exercises to rid the state of waste have been abrogated. No one knows who is charged with the responsibility of cleaning up the capital vis vas the state, the OCDA, Imo Entraco or the Imo Waste Management Agency, hence Imo is a dungeon.
