Nigeria Watchdog Newspaper will, as part of activities marking its 14th anniversary on November 20, 2026, confer a posthumous award on the late human rights activist, social crusader and former President of the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), Barrister Wisdom Durueke, in recognition of his numerous contributions to the entrenchment of democratic ethos, justice and good governance.
According to a statement signed by Mrs. Dorcas Samson-Achi on behalf of the Award Organising Committee, the newspaper decided to honour the late legal icon in appreciation of his immense contributions to human rights activism in Imo State and beyond.
The statement noted that Durueke devoted his life to ameliorating the plight of the less privileged, particularly those in need of justice, describing his commitment to human rights and fairness as worthy of emulation.
Samson-Achi further explained that the annual award is designed not only to recognise outstanding personalities but also to encourage and sensitise the new generation of leaders on the importance of living impactful lives that will positively influence society.
She recalled that Durueke, as a lawyer and human rights activist, distinguished himself as a dogged advocate for justice and fairness, particularly in the defence of the less privileged.
“It is on record that Durueke, during his lifetime, offered legal services pro bono to young people who lacked the financial capacity to fight for their rights,” she said.
The dual event will also provide an opportunity for Nigeria Watchdog Newspaper to honour other distinguished personalities who have distinguished themselves through their contributions to various spheres of human endeavour.
The 14th anniversary celebration and award ceremony is scheduled to hold on November 20, 2026.
