The Management of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Imo State, has confirmed a security incident on the university campus that resulted in the death of a visitor and the reported abduction of two female students.
The incident occurred on Sunday, September 6, 2026, according to a statement issued by the University Registrar, Chiedozie Uba.
The statement said Management was “deeply saddened” by the incident, adding that a visitor to the university was fatally shot during the attack.
It further disclosed that two female students were reportedly abducted in the course of the incident.
According to the university, the circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under investigation by relevant security agencies, while the Management is engaging with the authorities to secure the safe recovery of the abducted students.
“Management assures students, staff, parents and the entire University community that the safety and security of all members of the University community remain a top priority,” the statement said.
The university added that additional security measures were being implemented in collaboration with relevant security agencies to strengthen security on campus.
Management urged members of the university community to remain calm and vigilant, avoid unnecessary movement and promptly report any suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities.
The university said further information would be made available as appropriate as the situation develops.
